Work-Related Amputations
Traumatic amputations involving the hand account for 94.6% of all occupational amputations. Approximately, 90% of these amputations involve the fingers. These injuries most commonly occur in the mining, manufacturing industries and workers who operate moving machinery or power hand tools.
Research shows that:
☛ 20% of workers are unable to return to the job they performed before the injury.
☛ Traumatic amputations are twice as likely to occur on Saturday or Sunday as they are on a weekday.
☛ Amputations occur more frequently in males than in females, at a rate of 4:1.
